An amazing tool for MOOCs and SPOOCs that is robust, customizable, and scalable.

Overall Rating 95%

What do you like best? Streamlined authoring and learning interface, robust and easily scalable (cloud-based) software, created by Harvard and MIT and backed by edx.org (huge learning destination). My prime choice for self-paced, video and text-based courses. Also, the license is open source, which matches by personal preferences and makes the software customizable (although this requires intervention from a third-party vendor).
What do you dislike? It does not have the same feature set as "traditional" LMS such as instructor-learner interaction (aside from course forums), very little use of the course schedule, no easily editable gradebook.

What do you like best? the ease of management and the excellent level of customisation that has been achieved, as well as the intuitiveness that has resulted in a smooth user experience for students.
What do you dislike? the wiki section is particularly uninvolving, perhaps due to the changing times, and in general it would be desirable to increase the types of interactive activities, e.g. assignments.

What do you like best? The professional service in setting up the new version. Abstract Technology understands our needs. A.T. guides us very well through a mix of requirements combined with hot fixes and long term solutions. They professionally calm down the situation and clear it! These are examples of features we and our customers like: the microsites, auto enrollments.
What do you dislike? I miss a standard solution for bulk registration in the open edX community. Currently it's a bit cumbesome to register 100 people or more.

What do you dislike? From a DevOps/SRE perspective: It might be a bit overwhelming to get to work as you need, since there are many features and each needs some configuration to set it up.

The world's best open source LMS platform for creating high quality learning experiences

Overall Rating 97%
  • Usefulness
  • Usability
  • Customer Experience
  • Likelihood to Recommend
What do you like best? I think the best thing about Open edX is the user experience for course authors and also learners. Course authors can create courses easily in the Studio. They can create simple courses, or more complex and advanced courses if they need to. Learners enjoy a modern and intuitive interface (the LMS) making learning easy and fun on all devices. Another important thing is the quality of the software code, it's highly stable, scalable, and secure, with many ways to host and customise it. I love it!
What do you dislike? The software is highly scalable, but that comes at the cost of being a bit complicated for software developers who are new to the system. Luckily there are many service providers who can help you host it.

Probably the best open source LMS with focus on learners first!

Overall Rating 95%
  • Usefulness
  • Usability
  • Customer Experience
  • Likelihood to Recommend
What do you like best? Whereas other open-source lms, Open edX is focus on learners instead of instructors. The UI and UX is great, so simple to use as a learner, we don't event need to show them how it works. A new learner can easily dig into course content, track is progress, earn badges, etc... Also it is very scalable if you need a robust LMS for large amount of learners.
What do you dislike? Pretty hard to find some negative points with Open edX. Maybe the ecommerce integration is a bit complicated to configure at first, but oncce it's there it is working great!

What do you like best? It is easy to break long courses into manageable chunks and to check a learner's understanding at each step. Usually this would require me to fly to meet my new sales agents, but now I can simply sign them up for the course and track their progress.
What do you dislike? We had to find a work-around for being able to hide internal (Sales agent) courses from the general public. It would be nice to have an internal course option available.

What do you like best? Since Open edX is an open source project, you are able to use it for free and you also benefit from the community effort around it. The Open edX community is comprised of people from all kinds of background willing to help anyone deploy, run and create content for Open edX. It's also very easy to create courses since Open edX provides multiple elements for content (text, HTML, videos, questions etc), and the user experience is clean and easy to navigate.
What do you dislike? The deployment can be a bit cumbersome since it's a fairly large project. Luckily you are able to get help from the community or reach out to vendors.

What do you like best? EdX's assessment types are very flexible and robust. In addition to a number of standard built-in problem types (MC, check-all, numerical, etc.) it also provides ways to build your own custom problem types and custom graders. It's also very easy to incorporate custom interactives, with javascript and css allowed on almost every page.
What do you dislike? The tools for learner interaction (i.e. the forums) are fairly weak. They need more modern features, and especially more support for team-based moderation.

Open edX is the open source learning platform that MIT and Harvard built for edx.org's 11M+ learners

Overall Rating 100%
  • Usefulness
  • Usability
  • Customer Experience
  • Likelihood to Recommend
What do you like best? - In addition to the 11M+ users of edx.org, the Open edX software is used by 12M+ learners from corporations, universities, and nonprofits e.g. Microsoft, IBM, NYU and the US Air Force. - Proven user interface for instructors and learners. - No licensing, setup or royalty costs at all: the software is open source and you can install it freely at any time. - Its openness allows you to extend it into a data-driven, fully-featured and integrated platform of tools and learning components.
What do you dislike? As a platform that's fundamentally built to scale to tens of millions of learners, it's software architecture is more complex than most learning platforms'. Though this has zero impact on the instructor and learner experience (both are great), it does mean that it's sometimes more difficult for engineers to make deep customizations to the open source software without previous training.

It allows you to create a very attractive and diverse learning experience including diferente type of activities and resources and allow the learner to enjoy and profit from their learning path.
What do you dislike? It's not yet catered to small on campus courses, mostly to MOOCs. It lacks flexibility in some of the features it includes, but both edX and the open source community are making continuous development and improvements over it, which is very valuable.

What do you like best? I like the user-friendly interface and the various types of content that I can use. It's also a very flexible grading system. This is an open source solution and there is an possibility to extend functionality. There are intergations with external systems. So very flexible solution
What do you dislike? This is an open source, so I need some technical support.
